- Rising baseline. The signature climbs gently from left to right. A falling line is the first thing most practitioners correct.
- A bigger first letter. The first letter represents you; a clear, slightly larger one is linked with self-confidence.
- Recognisable name. Tradition favours a signature in which your name can be read: it's your identity on paper.
- No line through the name. One clean underline below is considered supportive; a line cutting through the letters is avoided.
- An upward, forward ending. The last stroke moves up and ahead, never dropping or turning back into the name.
- No dot at the end. A full stop is said to "stop" progress.
- Healthy size. At least as large as your normal handwriting.
- Upright or forward slant. A strong backward lean is usually softened.
- No cutting strokes. Especially nothing crossing out the first letter.

Check your own signature in 2 minutes
Sign your name 3 times on plain unlined paper and look at it from a distance:
- Draw a straight line from the start to the end of the signature. Does it rise, stay level or fall?
- Is the first letter clearly bigger than the others?
- Does any stroke cut through a letter? Is there a dot after the name?
- Does the last stroke go up and forward, or down and back?
If two or more answers are "no", tradition would suggest an adjustment. Often small changes (lifting the end, dropping the dot, moving the underline below) are enough.
